Several months before this race, Adam Bickett (aka Wildebeast) and Andrew Danly (aka Metal) had planned to race the Southern California edition of the RAAM Cycling Challenge, a timed, 400 mile race across the varied regions and terrains of Southern California. However, due to a severe lung infection, Andrew was unable to participate and was forced to withdraw at the last minute. Instead of racing the course in a relay style as originally planned, Adam had the task of racing the entire 400 mile course, a course that went up as high as Mt Palomar and out as far as the Salton Sea. Despite the loss of his teammate, Adam not only decided to race, but set out to beat the course record.
